"A Colorful Melting Pot: New choral music by young American composers"

American conductors Kimberly Dunn Adams (Western Michigan University, USA) and Dominick DiOrio (Indiana University, USA) present a session on American choral music of the 20th and 21st century featuring a curated collection of works in diverse styles by living composers.  Notable composers featured in the session will include Ysaye Barnwell, Abbie Betinis, Chen Yi, David Conte, Shawn Crouch, Dominick DiOrio, Stacey Gibbs, Cristian Grases, Sydney Guillaume, Jocelyn Hagen, Jake Runestad, and Zachary Wadsworth. Attendees will receive complimentary scores as part of the interactive session, which will include a combination of lecture, listening, and singing.

The five-movement setting of Wendell Berry poems movingly captures the emotional power of the composer’s poignant voyage following the death of her newborn son, Owen. Jeremy Jones and a select group of men from the Miami University Men's Glee Club welcome guest conductor Jakob Patriksson to Oxford a preview concert in celebration of their upcoming summer tour to Sweden and partnership with Swedish male ensemble Ars Veritas. I am honored that they will preview my new commissioned work for their combined venture on this occasion: Verbum Caro Factum Est, an a cappella carol for TTBB ensemble on a 16th century tune from the Piae Cantiones of 1582. The performance will be premiered officially this summer in Sweden and then recorded by the combined ensembles.

Guest conductor, composer, and IU faculty member Dominick DiOrio will conduct the Bernstein, as well as a performance of his own Horizon Symphony, a work about adventure and exploration commissioned by the Cincinnati Boychoir.

As a part of the celebration of their fiftieth-anniversary season, the Cincinnati Boychoir has commissioned Dominick to write a twenty-minute choral-orchestral work that will receive its first performance on March 6, 2015 - the anniversary of the Boychoir's first rehearsal in 1965. The six-movement work is entitled HORIZON SYMPHONY and is comprised of poetry by Walt Whitman, Stephen Crane, and an anonymous poet from the twelfth century; scored for male voices, including male trebles, altos, tenors, and basses, the work also calls for a full chamber orchestra with several percussionists, harps, brass, and strings. The work was conceived in part as a companion piece to Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms; Bernstein's work, which also turns 50 in 2015, was written for the choir of men and boys at Chichester Cathedral in Sussex, England.
